Bocas del Toro

Outstanding among the island's resorts is Punta Caracol Aqua Lodge run by José Luis Bordas from Barcelona, who discovered Bocas while on a special scholarship from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. José Luis combined his hospitality skills, and a love for the tropical wilderness, to create a "boutique resort". It is not rustic by any means. Orthopaedic beds and haute cuisine come with the thatched-roof cabins built on piles over the water.

But Punta Caracol is a wilderness resort with a "green" consciousness which incorporates solar panels and a biological waste treatment system. Many of the foods and vegetables served are produced at the resort's organic gardens (coconuts, tomatoes, bananas, etc).

Visitors can plan diving excursions to the island of Escudo de Veraguas, organize adventures up jungle rivers or plan airplane tours of the entire Bocas del Toro province.

Several marinas cater to the yachts for which Bocas is a popular destination.

The big traditional annual event of Bocas is the Fair of the Sea every September.

One of the most beautiful and successful residential developments in Bocas del Toro is Sunset Point. On a narrow isthmus, two canals have been dug, draining the surrounding land and allowing lot owners a boat mooring on their doorstep. There is also a marina with 118 deep water slips.
