Panama Sports and Leisure

Baseball:
Now considered a national sport, baseball was imported from the U.S. It is played all over the country, with a National League that since its foundation in 1944 has gained thousands of fans. Famous MLB players such as Carlos Lee (Houston Astros) and Mariano Rivera (NY Yankees) come from Panama.

Boxing:
Panama is the birthplace of some of the most famous prizefighters in the history of boxing, most notably Roberto "Hands of Stone" Duran. The sport is very popular amongst the populace, and Panamanian fighters are closely followed. Panama is the home of 24 former/current world champions.

Soccer:
A national sport, its popularity is arguably the highest in the country. The Panamanian national team, the "Marea Roja" or "Red Tide," is beloved throughout the isthmus, with huge parties resulting from winning matches. The national soccer league, ANAPROF, holds a tournament every year all across Panama.

Basketball:
Though not as popular as soccer or baseball, basketball does have a national league and National Basketball Federation. Panama's national team is amongst the strongest in the region, bringing in many medals for the country. It is very common for parks to have packed basketball courts with people playing until late at night.

Cycling:
On a competitive level the sport is regulated by the Panamanian Cycling Federation, which is a member of the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) and COPACI (Pan-American Cycling Federation). It is not uncommon to see cyclists on city and country roads training for big events.
